What are Fallen Angels?

fallen angelsRebel Angels - Holy Angels turned Rebellious Angels

Fallen angels are spiritual beings who were originally created good, holy angels by God but chose to rebel against Him, resulting in their expulsion from heaven and loss of divine favor. This definition holds consistently across most Christian and Jewish traditions, though the details vary significantly. Some see fallen angels as Satan and the angels who followed him in a primordial revolt before human history began. Others identify them with the “sons of God” mentioned in the Old Testament -Genesis 6, who sinned during the days of Noah by taking human women as wives.

This article will take a close look at and explore what are fallen angels Also, we will address questions.

Definition: What Are Fallen Angels?

Fallen angels started as holy, fiery servants, created solely to worship and serve only God in the heavenly realms. Like all angels, they possessed free will—the capacity to choose obedience or rebellion. Some exercised that freedom to turn against their Creator, transforming from glorious heavenly beings into darkened adversaries. Their fall involved a fundamental change in their nature and status, though they retained the characteristics and powers of supernatural beings.

The most common Christian interpretation depicts fallen angels (angeli lapis) as those who followed Satan in his rebellion against God. Revelation 12:7–9: “And there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven.” The great dragon—identified as “that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan”—was cast down along with his angels.

Two major models emerge from Scripture and tradition:

Model 1: Primordial Revolt — Satan, motivated by pride, led a rebellion before human history. One third of the angelic host joined him and were expelled from heaven. This is the dominant view in mainstream Christian theology.

Model 2: Old Testament Genesis 6 Transgression — The “sons of God” (bene ha'elohim-a Hebrew word) descended to earth, lusted after human women, took wives, and bore children called Nephilim. These mighty men corrupted all the earth, precipitating the Flood  (two angels mentioned- Shamchazai and Azael).

Some traditions merge these as sequential events—first Satan's revolt, then the other angels falling through lust. Others treat them as describing the same angelic fall from different perspectives.

How Did Fallen Angels Come into Existence?

Malevolent angels were not created evil. God made all angelic beings good, as Scripture affirms that everything He creates is good. The fall resulted from their own choice to rebel. According to rabbinic tradition in Pirke De-Rabbi Eliezer, angels who descended took on human form by “clothing themselves in clods of earth” to enable physical interaction with humanity. Their existence as fallen beings stems entirely from their free will decision to abandon their proper dwelling and reject God's authority.

Where Did They Go?

Scripture describes multiple destinations for demonic entities. Some appear to operate freely in the spiritual realm and upon earth, actively opposing God's purposes. Satan himself “prowls around like a roaring lion” according to 1 Peter 5:8. However, 2 Peter 2:4 states that God “cast them into Tartarus” (a Greek term for the deepest pit of darkness) and placed them in everlasting chains until judgment. Jude 1:6 similarly describes angels “kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day.”

This creates an apparent tension: some malevolent angels seem active while others are bound. Many interpreters reconcile this by suggesting the Genesis 6 transgressors specifically are imprisoned, while Satan's original followers retain limited freedom until final judgment.

Are All Demonic Angels Followers of Satan?

Yes, demonic spiritual entities are uniformly portrayed as Satan's followers across Christian tradition. Pirke De-Rabbi Eliezer identifies Samael (equated with Satan) as the leader who incited the angelic plot against Adam. Revelation 12 describes the dragon sweeping one third of the stars from heaven—widely interpreted as one third of the angelic host following Satan in rebellion. Whether through the original heavenly revolt or subsequent disobedience, all fallen angels operate under Satan's influence in opposition to God and mankind.

Fallen Angels' Roles, Power, and Limits

Across traditions, dark angels actively oppose God's purposes through several core activities.

Temptation: From the serpent in the Garden of Eden to Satan's wilderness assault on Christ. In the Bible, Matthew 4, fallen angels work to lead humans toward sin. They exploit weaknesses, present false pleasures, and obscure consequences. Also, they push people into vices.

Deception: 1 Timothy 4:1 warns of “deceiving spirits and things taught by demons.” False teaching, counterfeit spirituality, and lies about God's character flow from demonic influence.

Oppression and Possession:  People bound by evil spirits—unable to speak, afflicted with illness, tormented by multiple demons.

Systemic Influence: Principalities and powers may influence nations, institutions, and cultural movements while lower-ranking demons target individuals.

Their Limits

Despite real power, dark angels face absolute boundaries:

  • They are created beings, dependent on God's permission for every action (Job 1–2)
  • Christ has disarmed them through the cross (Colossians 2:15)
  • They cannot separate believers from God's love (Romans 8:38–39)
  • Their final destiny is already determined

Demons and Fallen Angels

demonsUnclean spirits - other fallen angels and wandering spirits

A significant debate exists within Christianity about whether demons and fallen angels are identical or distinct categories.

The Majority View: Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and most Protestant traditions teach that demons are simply fallen angels by another name. These are the same beings who rejected God and now work to oppose Him. This view offers simplicity and internal consistency.

The Minority View: Some evangelical and Pentecostal teachers distinguish between fallen angels and demons based on several textual observations:

  • 2 Peter 2:4 and Jude 1:6 describe certain angels bound in Tartarus, yet demons appear active on earth
  • 1 Enoch 15 describes the spirits of the dead Nephilim as demons condemned to wander the earth
  • Matthew 12:43–45 describes unclean spirits seeking “dry places” and bodies to inhabit—behavior suggesting disembodied entities rather than fallen angels who can assume form
  • Demons exhibit terror at judgment (James 2:19; Matthew 8:29) and behave differently than Satan, who still accesses heavenly courts (Job 1–2)

Under this view, fallen angels retain higher status and ability—including shape-shifting and heavenly access—while demons are earth-bound possessors, the spirits of hybrid beings (Nephilim) destroyed in the Flood.

NOTE: Nephilim are the offspring of fallen angels and earthly women.

The Bible does not explicitly state “demons equal fallen angels,” leaving room for interpretive differences. What remains clear across all views is that both categories represent evil spirits opposed to God and dangerous to mankind.

Fallen Angels and Mediums

Many Christians hold the belief that mediums are not genuinely in contact with deceased loved ones or kind-hearted spirits. Instead, they argue that these individuals are communicating with dark angels, malevolent beings who impersonate the dead to mislead people. If we accept this perspective, it suggests that prominent historical figures such as Padre Pio, Joan of Arc, and Edgar Cayce were truly deceived by these dark angels during their experiences. This reasoning raises significant doubts about the validity of such claims. It ultimately appears to be quite absurd, as it undermines the genuine spiritual experiences of many individuals and the positive impact they have had on others.

Dark angels, commonly referred to as demons, traverse the Earth in search of vulnerable individuals whom they can corrupt with their malevolent influences. These entities are skilled at masquerading as benevolent spirit guides or as loved ones who have passed away, using their deceptive appearances to gain people's trust and manipulate their emotions.

Typically, these malevolent spirits focus on mediums who lack purity of heart and display questionable character traits. Such mediums may be driven by greed, fame, or a desire for power, making them susceptible to the tempting messages from these dark beings. The demons employ these mediums to spread their deceitful messages, aiming to lead more people astray and perpetuate their influence. This manipulation not only affects the mediums themselves but also profoundly impacts the individuals who seek guidance from them, potentially leading them down a path of confusion and despair.

Malevolent angels possess a profound and unsettling ability to penetrate individuals' façades, discerning their deepest weaknesses and most intimate vulnerabilities. These malevolent beings are skilled at inflating egos, using flattery and deceit to exploit the insecurities that lie within. By promoting a false sense of pride and self-importance, they manipulate and deceive those around them, often leading individuals to believe they are more significant or powerful than they truly are.

As cunning impostors, fallen angels derive immense satisfaction from their talent for trickery, often weaving elaborate schemes that entrap unsuspecting souls. They make enticing promises of success, happiness, or fulfillment, but ultimately at the end delivering nothing, leaving their victims in darkness.

With each deception, demonic angels seek to undermine and destroy all that God has lovingly created, working tirelessly to spread chaos and despair. Their presence serves as a reminder of the fragility of human strength and the importance of remaining vigilant against influences that seek to distort truth and sow discord.

It is essential for mediums to acknowledge their imperfections and actively work through them in order to foster personal growth and spiritual clarity. This journey involves self-reflection, healing, and, ultimately, the release of any negative aspects that may hinder their spiritual practice. Maintaining a steadfast faith is crucial, as it reminds mediums that no matter the challenges they face, fallen angels or negative forces cannot sever the bond between believers and God's unwavering love and protection.

Additionally, mediums must approach spiritual encounters with a critical eye and a discerning spirit. The Bible emphasizes this in 1 John 4:1: “Do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God.” This guiding principle encourages individuals to engage in careful evaluation, ensuring that they do not blindly accept every spiritual experience as divine. By testing the spirits, mediums can better discern the authenticity and source of their encounters, fostering a safer and more grounded spiritual practice.

Fallen Angels and Spiritual Battle

The concept of a spiritual battle or spiritual warfare represents a continuous and intense conflict between the kingdom of God and the forces of darkness, commonly referred to as demonic entities. This ongoing battle is not abstract; it has tangible consequences for humanity and requires a thoughtful, active response from individuals.

People who nurture negative traits such as hate, greed, and grandiosity may find themselves ensnared and manipulated by demonic angels. These malevolent forces seek to exploit these weaknesses to undermine and erode the core principles and values established by God. This transformation into unwitting agents of destruction signifies a profound loss of autonomy and a shift away from divine intentions.

Spiritual battle is characterized by various strategies employed by these dark forces: temptation to stray from righteous paths, accusation of others to instill doubt, deception that obscures truth, and outright opposition to God's purposes. These tactics often manifest through societal structures, institutions, and individuals, making vigilance and discernment essential for navigating this complex spiritual landscape.

Spiritual warfare manifests in multiple ways across human experience:

Individual Impact: Temptation toward sin, spiritual oppression, and in severe cases possession or demonization affect human beings directly.

Mental torment, addiction, and patterns of destruction often have spiritual components alongside psychological and physical factors.

Systemic Evil: Some theologians identify demonic influence behind corrupt ideologies, unjust systems, and cultural movements that oppose God's purposes.

Moral Decay: The whole world experiences increasing darkness as evil spirits promote deception and false prophets lead many astray (1 Timothy 4:1).

Fallen Angels and the End-Times

The destiny of fallen angels is fixed in Scripture. They await final judgment and eternal separation from God with no possibility of redemption.

Revelation 20:10 completes the picture by speaking about the eternal fire: “And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of fire and burning sulfur… They will be tormented day and night forever and ever .”

Some unclean angels who sinned are described as already bound. Second Peter 2:4 and Jude 1:6 portray them in chains of darkness awaiting judgment day. Yet apocalyptic passages like Revelation 9:1–11 describe the bottomless pit being opened and demonic forces released for a time of destruction. Different interpreters reconcile these by distinguishing categories of demonic angels—some bound, others currently active, with final releases and battles preceding ultimate judgment.

Many see spiritual warfare and end-times where there will be an increase in demonic activity with the approach of Christ's return. As 2 Timothy 3:1–5 warns of “terrible times in the last days,”

In other words, fallen angels will eventually see and confront the consequences of their wrongdoings.

Can Fallen Angels Disguise Themselves as Spirits of Light, and How to Distinguish Between Holy Spirits and Fallen Angels?

good and evilSatan and the Holy Spirit

Absolutely. Paul warns in 2 Corinthians 11:14 that “Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.” If the evil one can present himself as luminous and good, his subordinate fallen angels can certainly do the same. This masquerading explains why so many people encounter what seem like loving, wise spiritual guides through mediums, near-death experiences, or occult practices—only to find these beings leading them away from God and into spiritual bondage.

Deception in spiritual encounters with demonic entities often begins subtly. Initially, a spirit may present seemingly accurate information, reveal personal details that resonate with the individual, or deliver messages that provide comfort and reassurance. These actions can create a false sense of security, leading one to trust the spirit's intentions. However, over time, the underlying motives of these spirits may emerge, revealing a more sinister agenda.

It is essential to recognize that there is a significant distinction between the energies of different types of spirits. The energy emitted by fallen angels—beings that operate with ill intentions—feels entirely different from the uplifting and positive energy associated with spirits of light, which are aligned with goodness and truth. By developing an awareness of these energy differences, individuals can better navigate their spiritual experiences and discern the true nature of the entities they encounter.

Furthermore, fallen angels will always reject the acknowledgment of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These entities actively contradict God's teachings, creating discord and confusion among people. Their presence often leads to an atmosphere of fear, undermining faith and trust. Additionally, fallen angels demonstrate a blatant disregard for individual free will, seeking to manipulate and control rather than empower personal choice and spiritual growth. Their influence can lead individuals away from the path of righteousness, causing them to question their beliefs and values.

How can we repel the energy of fallen angels and maintain ourselves in the light?

Practical steps for resisting fallen angels and their influence include:

Invoking Jesus Authority:

1-Mark 16:17 promises that in Jesus' name, believers will drive out demons. The name of Jesus Christ carries supreme authority in the spiritual realm.

2-Prayer and Covering Yourself with God's Energy:

One short prayer is-

"Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou,
O Prince of the heavenly hosts,
by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan,
and all the evil spirits,
who prowl about the world
seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen."

Every morning, take a moment to visualize yourself enveloped in God's divine energy.

STAYING IN THE LIGHT

1-Keeping your heart pure, having good intentions and faith, and practicing Jesus's teaching.

2-Refrain from harmful actions and negative thoughts. If it occurs, call upon God to guide you from darkness into light.

3-Living in truth rather than deception.

4-Striving for righteousness by showing kindness and compassion to others.

5-Standing firm in faith that extinguishes fear and doubt.

6-Holding to salvation and faith in God.

7-Wielding God's word against lies.

8-Maintaining constant prayer

What Gives Fallen Angels Power Over Humanity?

Several factors provide demonic forces access:

1-Our human transgressions, which include wrongdoing against ourselves, harm to others, and destruction of the natural world, provide fallen angels an opportunity to exert influence over us. These actions create a spiritual opening through which negative forces can gain a foothold, leading to further turmoil and suffering in our lives and the environment. It's essential to recognize the impact of our choices and strive for a path of healing and redemption.

2-Rejection of God and a lack of faith in all of God's beliefs.

Why Is Spiritual Warfare Intensifying Now?

Many interpreters connect increased demonic activity to end-times prophecy. Revelation 12 describes Satan being “hurled down” to earth, “filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short.” Some evangelical views see rising activity as a sign of Christ's approaching return.

Practical indicators suggest intensification. Anecdotal reports from Catholic dioceses indicate approximately 20% increases in exorcism requests following the COVID-19 pandemic. More people report spiritual encounters and oppression. Whether this represents an actual increase in demonic activity or increased awareness and recognition remains debated.
