 Introduction to an Ayahuasca Journey

-Ayahuasca Journey-

This was the beginning story of an ayahuasca journey I would never forget.

I met a woman, whom I will call Ms. MC, during a hypnosis workshop. It was unbelievable how instantly we connected. Little did I know this encounter would take me on another spiritual learning adventure.

I believe God was the architect of the encounter. As the saying goes, “God works in mysterious ways.”

During one of our conversations, she mentioned that her husband had studied under a shaman in South America. I don't recall whether it was Costa Rica or Ecuador. She also said that the first time she consumed ayahuasca, a plant medicine, she incorporated the ayahuasca spirit. It was an experience she would never forget.

I had heard the name Ayahuasca once while visiting Brazil, but I never gave it much thought. I was not interested. In Brazil, Ayahuasca is associated with Santo Daime. I realize now that it was not meant for me to explore Ayahuasca then.

I was intrigued by her statement that she had consumed ayahuasca and incorporated an ayahuasca spirit.

One day, I received an email from Ms.MC inviting me to attend a ceremony. The ceremony would take place in approximately three months. After consulting my spirit guides and getting the green light, I accepted the invitation.

Although I was low on monetary funds, I had faith that things would work out. And, so it did. Money appeared effortlessly. When the time arrived, I was off to another adventure.

When I arrived, Ms. MC was waiting at the airport. She insisted that I stay at her home. Before heading home, she drove me to a nearby waterfall so I could enjoy the calm after the flight.

The Shamanic Practitioner

When we arrived, her husband was waiting for us. I learned that only the three of us would be in the ceremony. Ms. MC's husband was very nice when I arrived.

Sensing my confusion, he started talking about himself. He stated that he had lived in an indigenous community in South America for a couple of months, learning the traditional knowledge and practices of indigenous culture.

He was highly trained in shamanic rituals and has conducted ayahuasca spiritual shamanic ceremonies. His mission is to bring awareness to the population in general of the healing value of shamanic work and the value of Ayahuasca. I don't recall if I was asked if I was currently taking psychiatric medications, which is extremely important.

As for Ms. MC, he told me she was a gifted spiritual medium who incorporates the Ayahuasca Healing Spirit. Together, they conduct ayahuasca ceremonies, bringing forth the beauty and power of shamanic work.

The Mysterious Ayahuasca

"Is your spiritual practice the same as the Brazilian Santo Daime ?" I asked.

“No,” he replied. Although there are some basic elements between his practice and Santo Daime, they are distinct.

He stays within the traditional shamanic framework, whereas Santo Daime tends to deviate, incorporating elements from several religious or spiritual traditions.

"What exactly is Ayahuasca?" I asked him.

He said that Ayahuasca was one of the various plant medicines found in the Amazon Jungle that had been used by the indigenous people for centuries. People believe that plant medicines are beneficial for a range of issues.

He elaborated that the Ayahuasca brew is considered a sacred medicine, traditionally used in spiritual ceremonies by various indigenous groups in the Amazon. This powerful brew is made from a combination of the Banisteriopsis caapi vine and the Psychotria viridis leaf, and it is believed to facilitate personal well-being, deep healing, and profound insights into everyday life challenges.

The choice to consume Ayahuasca is ultimately a very personal decision, as it involves a significant commitment to self-exploration and transformation. During the ceremony, participants are encouraged to engage with the healing energy of the Ayahuasca Spirit, affectionately known as Mother Ayahuasca. The focus of the experience is on this connection, and everything else tends to become secondary to the individual's journey and revelations.

Because I have always had difficulty taking any kind of liquid medicine or tea, I felt a sense of relief when I discovered that I was not required to ingest the traditionally prepared plant medicine.

Image of Female Energy

After receiving the okay to go from my spirit guides and prior to my visit, I kept having visions of a female figure calling me.

It felt like the energy was a constant reminder of the trip, drawing me into an unknown spiritual adventure.

It is said that when a person has a strong urge to visit Shirdi, India, it is Sai Baba calling the person.

Was this the same thing? Was the energy of the Ayahuasca Spirit calling me to this distant place to attend one of her ceremonies?

waterfallAyahuasca Experience - profound healing and spiritual awakening

Before the Ceremony

It was mid-afternoon, and the house was extremely quiet. The ceremony was set to take place around 8pm.

I was in the kitchen, trying to come up with questions to ask the Ayahuasca Spirit, as directed by Ms. MC and her husband. They felt it was a good idea to write my questions down on a piece of paper so I would not forget them when in front of the Ayahuasca Spirit.

After a while, I came up with the question, “Am I on the right spiritual path?” It was the only question I could think of.

As I continued to sit silently in the kitchen, I began thinking about Ayahuasca.

Although I was firmly determined not to ingest the liquid, the thought of Ayahuasca kept reappearing. I decided to leave everything in God's hands.

Suddenly, I heard a sound coming from the living room. It was Ms. MC's husband getting things ready for the ceremony.

The Ceremony

An altar was set up on the floor. It consisted of various items. Each item was placed meticulously on top of a cloth with the image of Ganesh in the center.

It was time for me to get ready. The ceremony would commence soon.

I quickly changed into my white clothes and gathered items that I wanted to be blessed. As directed, I carefully place the items on the altar.

A place on the floor, on the side of the room, was set up for me to sit. Large and small pillows, as well as blankets, were made available to me. Additionally, a bucket was placed beside me. I was told that the bucket was nearby in case I decided to taste the brew and needed to vomit. They had thought of everything and made sure that all my needs were met. I sat down and made myself comfortable.

On previous occasions, I was told and read about the effects of ayahuasca -people vomiting after Ayahuasca consumption.

According to Wikipedia,..."vomiting almost always follows ayahuasca ingestion..."

Was the ayahuasca tea so nauseating that one would need to vomit? This did not sound right to me. I continued to pray for guidance.

By now, the house lights were turned off. The only light available was coming from a candle near the altar. Ms MC sat quietly in meditation as her husband began diligently blessing the items on the altar. Each item was given the same amount of attention, except for one- a jar with a liquid substance. It was Ayahuasca. He handled the jar delicately and with much love. It was the most precious item on the altar. Special blessing prayers and rituals were conducted.

I continued to pray fervently. Unexpectedly, I began to feel a strong urge to taste Ayahuasca. It was as if some invisible force was directing me to do so. However, how was this possible? It was one thing to talk about doing something and another to actually do it. I continued praying for guidance.

As mentioned above, all my life, I had a difficult time swallowing liquid medicine. This situation was no different. In fact, it was worse due to the brew's reputation- foul smell and disgusting taste.

While Ms. MC's husband proceeded with the rituals, I continued praying. A few minutes later, he moved towards Ms. MC and offered her a shot glass of Ayahuasca. She took it without any hesitation. Afterward, she was given another glass of Guayusa, a pleasant tea, to rinse her mouth and remove the undesirable taste.

My mind kept telling me he would approach me soon. I continued to pray for guidance. When he moved toward me, he politely asked, “Do you wish to drink Ayahuasca?” Before I could think of an answer, the words were already coming out of my mouth. "Yes, I will," I said. It was as if an invisible force had taken over my body and spoken through me.

Without much thought, I was pouring the brew into my mouth. I could not believe it. There was no taste or smell. When Ms. MC's husband offered me Guayusa tea to rinse my mouth and remove the taste, I refused. I was fine.

Was the Ayahuasca spirit responsible for this? It had to be. Otherwise, I would never have been able to ingest the brew. There was no other explanation.

Some individuals would dismiss the spiritual and offer a psychological explanation for my behavior. However, I have experienced many spiritual events in my lifetime, so I know the difference.

It was time to call the Ayahuasca Spirit to join us. The prayers and songs had begun. The mellifluous voices of Ms. MC and her husband electrified the atmosphere. Unfamiliar with the words, I hummed.

Although I was now humming, the thought of what had happened to me earlier was still vivid in my mind. I remained stunned.

In no time, Ms. MC was under the Ayahuasca Spirit’s control. Her energy and the spirit’s energy merged. Ms. MC's husband rushed over to assist. After exchanging a few words with him, the Ayahuasca Spirit called my name. The spirit wanted me to sit in front of her.

I rushed over and sat down. At first, I had difficulty understanding what the spirit was saying. It spoke in a low, soft voice. Although it was Ms. MC's body, the tone of voice and form of expression were certainly not hers. The Ayahuasca Spirit was in control while Ms. MC's conscious mind was in rest mode.

Suddenly, her tone intensified. “Do you have any questions for me?” the spirit asked lovingly. At first, I could not think of any. Then I remembered the question I had written earlier. “Am I on the right spiritual path?”

“Look inside your heart. The answer is there. It will tell you if you are on the right path,” the spirit replied.

“What was that about?” I said to myself. I wanted a definitive answer; instead, I got a “how to do it yourself” response. It was clearly not the answer that I expected. I remained silent and allowed the spirit to continue to speak. Suddenly, it stopped and took a feather from the altar, and proceeded to sway it near my upper torso and head in a systematic manner.

As the Ayahuasca Spirit continued to wave the feather in front of me, I began to feel an invisible energy flowing throughout my entire body. The Ayahuasca Spirit was performing a spiritual cleansing on me. The experience was awe-inspiring. The desire for a definitive answer to my question vanished. For an instant, the Ayahuasca Spirit's energy and I became one.

By the end of the cleansing, what had been vague became lucid. I began to recognize the spirit's method of operation. The spirit's mission was not to answer my question but to help me discover the answer. Additionally, the Ayahuasca Spirit wanted me to understand that all the answers to my questions were within me. To bring them forth, all I needed was faith and self-confidence. It was a profound lesson I needed to receive.

By then, I had returned to my seating area. Ms. MC's husband was listening attentively to the Ayahuasca Spirit. As I sat in silence, I closed my eyes and meditated. I felt the energy the Ayahuasca Spirit had transferred to me embrace me more fully. When I opened my eyes, Ms. MC's husband was in his seat, and the spirit did not seem to be occupying Ms. MC's body.

Once again, the singing commenced. I began to shake a maraca (a musical instrument) that had been given to me earlier. The sound of singing and the maraca's shaking must have filtered through the gates of Heaven and awakened the angels, for their divine energy was indeed in the room.

Unexpectedly, Ms. MC's husband stopped singing. The Ayahuasca Spirit began speaking to him. Once again, the spirit called my name. I immediately sat nearby, waiting for the spirit to speak. I thought the spirit was no longer in Ms. MC's body, but I was wrong.

At one point, I asked the Ayahuasca Spirit to bless me. “Of course,” it replied. The spirit instructed me to close my eyes, place my hands over my heart, and open myself up. Then it placed Ms. MC's hands on my shoulders and heart. Immediately, a gentle, tingling sensation began to swirl around my heart. The more receptive I became, the more the sensation spread to other areas of my body. By the end of the blessing, I felt as if my body were encased in an invisible shell filled with immense joy, love, and healing energy.

When I opened my eyes, the Healing Spirit, who was still in possession of Ms. MC's body, was waving her hands in a rhythmic pattern. Immediately, the movement of the hands mesmerized me.  It was as if the spirit was communicating through hand movements. Although no words were spoken, the message(s) was explicit. Love is the answer or cure to all problems and illnesses. Without love, the body is unfulfilled and meaningless.

By the end of the ceremony, the Healing Spirit thanked me for tasting the Ayahuasca brew. It was confirmed. The Healing Spirit made it possible for me to ingest the brew.

I could not believe how blessed I was. The Healing Spirit had given me a tremendous gift- the gift of love. The blessing was extraordinary.

Soon afterward, the singing commenced. There was so much joy in the air.

Earlier that day, Ms. MC told me that it was a common practice for indigenous people to eat and talk after the ceremony. I could not comply. I was so exhausted after the ceremony that all I wanted was to go to sleep. I got up, apologized for not joining them, said good night, and went to bed. It was the best sleep ever.

The next morning, I shared my experience with Ms. MC and her husband. Although I did not have any “massive spiritual revelation” after ingesting Ayahuasca, the experience was deeply valuable. Connecting with the Ayahuasca Spirit and receiving divine energy were unexpected gifts I will treasure forever.

I went in without knowing what to expect, and came out very pleased with the results.

The Departure

I stayed a few more days with Ms. Mc and her husband. On the day of my departure, I thanked them for their warm hospitality and for the opportunity to be part of a shamanic event.

The trip back home was long and tedious, but surprisingly, I remained calm throughout. As I looked out the plane window and focused on the clouds, my thoughts drifted back to the day of the Ayahuasca healing ceremony. In that solitary moment, I wondered why I had been chosen to attend this spiritual ceremony. Suddenly, the answer came to me out of nowhere.

The purpose of attending the Ayahuasca ceremony was for me to witness the divine energy and to spread the word via this website and verbally. People need to know that these ceremonies are meant to cleanse and heal the body as well as the soul. They need to mend their ways and prepare for the journey back home.

Ayahuasca is not a recreational drug, as many think. It is a spiritual medicine created by God for healing the soul. Moreover, it heals the body and soul to keep them in a balanced and harmonious state. It works on different levels and should be used accordingly. People should not abuse it. Instead, Ayahuasca users should be respected, loved, and treated with the highest regard.

The Ayahuasca vine is sacred.

Ceremonies guided by The  Healing Spirit do not require the person to ingest Ayahuasca. The spirit only recommends when the situation calls for it. Its energy alone can perform wonders.

A few weeks later, back home, I was in bed relaxing in a semi-conscious state. I found myself listening to the words of a woman similar to the one in the above painting. The following is a summary of what I recall.

"I am Catholic, Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, Muslim, etc. I am all. I am the essence of all Humanity. I am  Black, White, Brown, Red, Yellow, etc. I am young, old, male, female, etc. People who will see the painting will see the image they need to see to connect with me. I am all, and I am nothing. My mission is to lead Humanity into the path of righteousness and eternal light."

Thank you, Healing Spirit for your immense love and wisdom.

Update: Ms. MC, wanted me to inform the readers of the following:

"Once SHE ( Healing Spirit) comes into the body, SHE never leaves until we have finished ...............and SHE always asks us if there are any more last questions before SHE leaves..........When SHE has finished Her work and we have no more questions or cleansing required, SHE suggests  closing the ceremony."

My second Ayahuasca experience was completely different. It was not what I expected; it was extremely intense and what I needed. WOW...WOW...WOW.

To be continued. Also, my Ayahuasca journey to a retreat center in Peru.

Summary

Ayahuasca, when used appropriately and under the right circumstances, can offer significant benefits for personal growth and healing. However, it is essential to approach this powerful psychoactive brew with caution. If you have a history of mental illness, are currently taking psychoactive drugs, or have any underlying health conditions, it is vital to communicate this information to the facilitator before participating in a ceremony. The effects of Ayahuasca can be intense and may exacerbate existing issues, potentially leading to adverse reactions. Ensuring that the facilitator is aware of your health status can help them provide the necessary support and create a safer environment for your experience. Prioritizing your well-being is crucial when exploring such profound and transformative practices.

Many ayahuasca retreats in South America will give you a questionnaire to fill out before attending a ceremony. regarding your health status. If the retreat center you selected doesn't, that is a sign to go elsewhere.

In addition, if a retreat center does not provide personal safety and trust, you need to stay away. Not all Ayahuasca retreats are the same.

Do your homework on Ayahuasca retreats before selecting the right one.

Also, many individuals call themselves ceremony leaders when they are not. Just because someone has attended a few ceremonies does not make them a ceremony leader. A ceremony leader needs to be highly trained.
