Mary Mother of Jesus

Unconditional Love of  a Mother

As Mary climbed the hill of Golgotha, she felt the weight of grief and desperation pulling her down. Silently weeping, she approached the cross where her son had been nailed. With trembling hands, she reached out slowly to touch his feet.

Although she knew that the crucifixion was part of why he came into the world, she couldn't help feeling his pain and suffering. If she could, she would have traded places with him to stop his agony. But prayer was her only choice. As she stood there, devastated and tears in her eyes, she closed her eyes and prayed.

When she opened her eyes to look at her beloved son, she saw a serpent slowly crawling up the cross toward her son’s feet. She quickly grabbed it and held it in her hand. Her gentle grip had immobilized it.

She wiped the tears from her face and said calmly, “You have come to do harm to my son’s soul, but I will not allow you. I am here to protect him. From darkness you came, and to darkness you will return.” When she placed the serpent down, it moved swiftly into a hole in the ground and vanished.

It was Lucifer. He had transformed into a serpent. For years, he had tried to poison or corrupt Jesus’ soul, but was unsuccessful. Jesus' faith in God was unbreakable. Seeing him nailed to the cross and vulnerable, Lucifer thought it was the perfect chance to attack. But Mary, his beloved mother, stepped in.

Lifting her eyes toward her son, she saw that he had been gazing at her with loving eyes. Sweat and blood streamed down his face. The final moment was near. In a barely audible voice, Jesus spoke to his mother.

Do not cry for me; soon I will be with my Father in heaven. You are the mother of all humanity. Love and protect the children of God, just as you loved and protected me. You hold the key that opens the door to new beginnings. Show them the way. Thank you, mother.

With his eyes fixed on the heavens, Jesus spoke his last words, "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. It is finished... into your hands I commit my spirit!"

It was over. Jesus' spirit had stepped out of the body.

Staring at her son's lifeless body, she knew that his mission had been completed. He was on his way to be with his Father.

His comforting words had given her the strength she needed to move forward. Her mission had just begun. She would protect and love all of God's children. Moreover, she would show them the way to new beginnings.

She was and still remains the mother of all humanity.

blessed Mary

Who is Mary?

The Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, plays a significant and multifaceted role in Christianity. She is venerated for her purity and occupies a central place in numerous devotional practices.

According to religious doctrine, Mary was conceived without original sin. This belief protects her from the flaws of original sin from the very beginning, enabling her to be a pure vessel for the incarnation of Jesus.

One of the most significant moments in Mary's life is the Annunciation, during which the angel Gabriel tells her that she will conceive Jesus.

It is the Holy Spirit who plays a crucial role as the divine power that enables Mary to conceive Jesus. This event marks a pivotal moment in biblical history. It not only emphasizes Mary's important role in the divine plan but also highlights her humility and willingness to accept God's will.

During the Crucifixion, her presence by the cross of Jesus illustrates her unwavering support and deep emotional connection to her son during his suffering.

Did Mary have other Children?

The question of whether Mary had other children besides Jesus has sparked considerable debate among theologians and scholars. Some biblical passages suggest that Mary had more children after Jesus. For instance, Matthew 1:24-25 uses the term "until" to imply that Mary and Joseph consummated their marriage after Jesus' birth. This interpretation has led to the belief that Jesus had younger siblings.

Several biblical references support the idea that Jesus had biological brothers:

  • Mark 6:3 references Jesus as having brothers named James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon, suggesting Mary bore additional children.
  • John 2:12 distinguishes between Jesus' 'brothers' and his 'disciples,' indicating these brothers were biological siblings rather than spiritual followers.
  • The phrase' mother and brothers' in Matthew 12:46 also supports the interpretation of a biological relationship.

The discussions surrounding Mary's perpetual virginity suggest that terms like "brothers" can be interpreted in a broader familial context. Supporters of this doctrine propose that these "brothers" may actually refer to close relatives or step-siblings from Joseph's previous marriage, rather than direct biological children of Mary. This interpretation upholds the belief in Mary's lifelong virginity.

Note: There is no biblical evidence that Joseph was married before Mary.

Mary and Other Religions

Mary plays a central role in Christian tradition, but her recognition and veneration differ widely in other religions. In Islam, Mary is highly respected as Jesus' mother and is considered one of the most virtuous women. The Quran acknowledges her virginity and purity, but she is not worshiped or venerated in the same way as in Christian tradition. This respect emphasizes her importance, but it does not carry the same theological significance attributed to her in Christian doctrine.

In Judaism, Mary is primarily regarded as a historical figure rather than holding any theological significance. Since Judaism does not recognize Jesus as the Messiah, Mary does not have a prominent religious role. While her story is acknowledged within the context of Jesus' life, she is not venerated or given special status.

Hinduism, which centers around a pantheon of deities, does not recognize Mary at all. The absence of figures from Abrahamic religions in Hinduism means that Mary is not included in its religious narratives.

In the Bahá'í Faith, Mary is honored for her purity and her important role as the mother of Jesus. The Bahá'í writings acknowledge her significance and commend her spiritual qualities, reflecting deep respect for her character.

Similarly, the Druze faith also holds Mary in high regard and describes Mary as 'Sayyida Maryam' -Our Lady Mary. This faith emphasizes her attributes of spiritual purity and dedication. Druze traditions include a respectful acknowledgment of Mary as the mother of the Messiah, Jesus.

This recognition highlights her important role across different religions and underscores the universal qualities of purity and dedication that she embodies.

While Christianity and other religious beliefs holds Mary in high regard, this reverence is largely absent in Islam and Judaism, where Jesus is acknowledged differently, impacting her recognition in those faiths.

Mary's Sightings

Marian apparitions, or reported supernatural appearances of Mary, have played a significant role in deepening the catholic faith of believers and fostering devotion. These apparitions are often evaluated by the Catholic Church, with local bishops responsible for determining their authenticity. Those deemed genuine receive approval for public veneration and often lead to established feast days.

One of the most recognized apparitions is that of Our Lady of Guadalupe in 1531. Mary appeared to Juan Diego and asked for a church to be built, leaving her image imprinted on his cloak. This apparition has become a cornerstone of Marian devotion in Mexico and beyond. Similarly, the apparition at Lourdes in 1858, where Mary identified herself as ‘the Immaculate Conception,’ has led to the site becoming a major pilgrimage destination.

Apparitions often convey messages calling for prayer, penance, and devotion. The messages from Our Lady of Fátima in 1917, for example, emphasized the need for prayer and repentance. Some apparitions, like the one at Kibeho, Rwanda, in 1981, included warnings of future events, such as the Rwandan Genocide.

Unique apparitions like the one at Knock, Ireland, in 1879, involved a silent vision of Mary along with St. Joseph, St. John, and a lamb representing Jesus. Recent apparitions, such as those reported in the United States at Champion, Wisconsin, have also received formal recognition by the local bishop.

Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Blessed Virgin Mary, help me to push away all poisonous thoughts from my heart and mind, and open the door for a new beginning.

Amen

Hail Holy Queen

mary and jesusImmaculate Conception - Pope Pius ix

Hail, holy Queen, mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! Pray for us, O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Amen.

Memorare

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that any one who fled to thy protection, implored thy help or sought thy intercession, was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins my Mother; to thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful; O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me,

Amen.

Loving Mother of the Redeemer

Loving Mother of the Redeemer, Gate of heaven, star of the sea, Assist your people who have fallen yet strive to rise again. To the wonderment of nature you bore your Creator, yet remained a virgin after as before. You who received Gabriel's joyful greeting, have pity on us poor sinners.

Blessed Virgin Mary

mary1

Mother Mary, you conceived Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit. God chose you because of your pure soul. You loved and protected Jesus with all your heart and soul. You were with Him from the beginning to the bitter end. Although there was nothing you could do to stop Jesus Christ's final days of torment, you remained by His side and never abandoned Him.

Mother Mary, I ask you to stay by my side. Protect me from all harm and clear my mind so I can do the right things according to God's will. Please show me the path to the Divine and help me to stay on it.

Thank you, and may God's will be done now and always. I love you.

A Mother to all of God's Children

Mary is cherished and honored by the Catholic Church, but she transcends any single faith. She is the mother of all humanity. Regardless of a person's religion or beliefs, she is always ready to listen to your prayers.
